Katsina State was formerly a city-state and a Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State before it was carved out carved out of Kaduna State in 23rd September 1987. The State is bordered to the North by the Niger Republic, to the South by Kaduna State, to the east by Kano and Jigawa States and to the West by Zamfara State. The State covers an area of 24,192 sq. km (9.341sq miles) of the landmass of Nigeria and is ranked 17th of the 36 states of Nigeria. The state has a population of 7,558,068 (NPoPC 2015 projection) and is ranked 5th of 36 position by landmass. The state has 3 senatorial districts, 361 political wards and consists of 34 Local Government Areas namely Bakori, Batagarawa, Batsari, Baure, Bindawa, Charanchi, Dandume, Danja, Dan Musa, Daura, Dutsi, Dutsin-ma, Faskari, Funtua, Ingawa, Jibia, Kafur, Kaita, Kankara, Kankia, Katsina, Kurfi, Kusada, Mai’Aduwa, Malumfashi, Mani, Mashi, Matazu, Musawa, Rimi, Sabuwa, Safana, Sandamu and Zango.
